Sammy is a model Leader
More than anything else is the ability he demonstrated to unite often polarizing players and factions. Even as his stature expanded and he started to gain the respect of the men he led, his ego never got too big for his team. He found the right dynamics to keep his team ticking. In addition, he was able to manage big players such as Gayle and Pollard with distinction.
He stood up for his players. At the 2016 T-20 world cup, Sammy fought negative utterances against his team in the media. He rubbished the " brainless" comment made by Mark Nicholas about the West Indies players. He did so by injecting the motivation in his players and let the whole world know that West Indies was going to prove them wrong. West Indies made a mockery of the discriminatory statement by winning the world cup in the most emphatic way possible, four sixes off the last four balls.
He pushed back against the W.I.C.B and publicly criticized them, knowing very well that it would cost him something. It cost him the captaincy. And more recently, he expressed that he was called " Kalu" by his Sunrisers's Hyderabad teammates in the very stratified society of India. He is perfectly right to question the name calling. Being the leader of a team consisting predominantly of players of African descent, he is more qualified than most to speak about those issues. He always carry with him the mantle of the region and the concerns of his players. Therefore, he will never be numb to injustice.
Sammy continues to show his leadership capacity by displaying the courage to speak up . The people of the Caribbean need to understand that in Sammy they have a leader of exceptional repute.
